Civil War

Darlings,

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

On April 12th, 1861 our country engaged in Civil War. There was nothing civil about it. North vs. South spurred on by Lincoln’s election and made worse with the issue of slavery clearly divided us as a union - the separation in ideas on how to govern a land. There is nothing to make up for lives lost. Sometimes agreeing to disagree is the best way to find union and get along. Idealistic? Perhaps.

Someone asked me, how can you find yoga in war? It’s easy. When you are in it, you can’t see that in the end, there is always what we wanted in the beginning, kindness, mercy, compassion, surrender and finally, contemplation on how to do better next time.

Whether it’s a war between sides, countries or within ourselves, our collective intention is to practice with the presence of what already is – before, after and what lies within each battle: Mercy, Compassion, surrender, kindness and contemplation.

Unconditional Love….

Darlings,

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

On that note...

Our collective intention today is to celebrate the idea of unconditional love. Many of this feel this in the love of another or the love of the passion or the purpose we have in life. But is it so very obvious and evident in the love given from an animal. The words they can’t speak we can see in the quiet love and nurturing back unconditionally towards us. It’s the same nurturing we feel when we practice yoga, if we chose to accept it. It might not look as cute and fluffy as a puppy, but our practice is there to give back to us unconditionally and fuel that love forward. Today, we honor the anniversary of the founding of the ASPCA-the prevention of cruelty to animals back on this day April 10, back in 1866. The Society spurred on many humane movements from pets to people for over a century, engaging in the reminder and awareness of all living things and that love is all you need…unconditionally.

On April 10, 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is founded in New York City by 54 year old philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh.

Nine days later, the first effective anti-cruelty law in the United States was passed, allowing the ASPCA to investigate complaints of animal cruelty and to make arrests.

From slaughter houses to house pets, he worked with police, schools etc. to educate and eradicate abuse. As the pioneer and innovator of the humane movement, the ASPCA quickly became the model for more than 25 other humane organizations in the United States and Canada. And by the time Bergh died in 1888, 37 of the 38 states in the Union had passed anti-cruelty laws.

Bergh’s dramatic street rescues of mistreated horses and livestock served as a model for those trying to protect abused children.

The Pony Express…

Darlings,

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

On that note...

On this day, April 3rd 1860, The Pony Express debuted bringing mail between Missouri and California in a speedy 10 days. It was a time before Radio, telephones and only lasted 18 months before the telegraph was invented but it was the start of rapid communication and union between people and places far and wide. A form of yoga, which we don’t always think in terms of our instant communication these days but when we communicate, we connect and when we connect we are in yoga, just like when we come to the mat to connect with ourselves.

Great timing for this lesson.

Mercury is in retrograde so communication is especially difficult around now.

Communication is not just with words, but also with thoughts. As our collective intention today, in practice and in our daily routine, focus on the communication of swift but kind words within so that swift and kind thoughts and words can be sent out…pony express style.
