In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

On that note...

It's international Women's Day, March 8th. Ironically, it is also the cusp of the first day Barbie hit the toy shelves back in 1959.

International Women's Day is a global day celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

Barbie set foot at the American Toy Fair on 3/9/1959 in New York City. She was created by Ruth Handler co-founder of Mattel. Barbie was inspired by her own child growing out of the ‘baby and paper doll phase. She was created with the intention for her child to use her imagination and dream big for her potential, future, adulthood, career, responsibility and independence.

She faced a lot of controversy being an idealistic impossible to attain in looks and material wants. But with any thing or idea that is put out there for the world to judge, she was and still is, the model girls use to play out their dreams for what's to come.

At that time in our countries history, Barbie provided young girls with an alternative to traditional 1950s gender roles. She has had a series of eclectic jobs, from airline stewardess to doctor, pilot and astronaut to Olympic athlete and even U.S. presidential candidate. She had a never-ending supply of great clothes, homes and cars and careers. She met Ken in 1961. I believe they are still together.

Since 1959, more than 800 million dolls in the Barbie family have been sold around the world and Barbie is now a bona fide global icon and childhood institution.

Our collective intention, in honor the woman, 11 inches tall or 5 foot 4. 3 ounces or 145 pounds. Dream big whether you played with the doll or not. Everyone has a dream. It doesn’t have to LOOK a certain way or be anything other then pursuing the highest you have to offer and receive.
